Abdul Gaffoor Mosque
From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle
|
The lovely old Abdul Gaffoor Mosque has a courtyard and small houses for Malay and Indian worshippers.
Originally built in 1859 and named after an Indian-Muslim butcher, the Arabian-style mosque is an oasis of calm. The prayer hall, decorated with Moorish arches, has a tableau tracing the origins of Islam. Outside prayer times, the mosque is occupied by devotees who drop by to spend time to read the Koran or to chat - a practice adopted from the time when the mosque was a sanctuary from crowded houses or a place of refuge from the heat. The mosque is on the national monuments list.
