What Accountants Do

Whether you are CPA, FCPA, ACA or FCA qualified, you are basically trained as an accountant. What these terms describe is your affiliation with a recognised accounting body. Chartered Accountants, for example, belong to a professional organisation that has received a Royal Charter bestowed by the Queen of England, Elizabeth II.

The work of an accountant encompasses areas such as setting budgets, handling corporate recovery and insolvency, managing assets and dispensing tax and investment advice.

Where Accountants Work

Singapore's "Big Four" accounting firms - PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PWC), Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and KPMG - traditionally employ a large number of graduate accountants fresh from university every year.

In the private sector, Accountants have the choice of working in the banks and financial institutions, multinational comapnies, and not-for-profit organisations.

In the public sector, job opportunities are available at the Auditor-General's Office, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) and other statutory boards.
