Especially the stretch along Arab Street, Arab traders, together with Bugis, Javanese, Boyanese, Banjarese, Sumatrans, Malays and people from the Riau Islands, eventually settled in the area, transforming Kampong Glam into a commercial hub. This area still draws those looking for bargains in textiles, lace, basketware and haberdashery.
In Arab Street, shop for batik cloth, either in sarong lengths as worn by the Malays, or fashioned into clothes, table linen and paintings. Baskets of every shape, size and colour are piled on the pavement. There's leatherware and ethnic jewellery too, as well as gold and silver, heavily embroidered songket fabric, prayer mats and alcohol-free perfumes. Arab Street is also a favourite place for those who need accessories for masquerades and costume parties - it has sequins, beads, feathers, costume jewellery and glittering make-up galore.
