Adjacent to CHIJMES is Singapore's oldest Catholic church (consecrated in 1846), the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. It is the product of the unification of the diverse Spanish, Portuguese and French parishes, whose priests were sick of having nowhere suitably reverential to hold their services. Built in 1846 in the design of a crucifix, the cathedral was the second Roman Catholic church in Singapore. It has Roman Doric pillars and a marble pavement from Antwerp.
