Changi Village Edit page

From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle

Changi Village, on the far northeast coast of Singapore, is an escape from the hub-bub of central Singapore. A wander around Changi Village offers a window into a more relaxed side of Singapore, where singlets, bermudas and thongs (flip-flops) - the quintessential heartlander uniform - is the look and people are slightly less accustomed to seeing ang mors (ie. foreigners) in their midst.

The buildings at Changi Village are modern (although there are some interesting old "black-and-white" bungalows along Loyang Avenue), but there's still a village atmosphere with the lively and quite renowned hawker centre next to the Changi Village Bus Interchange being a focal point. There's a small, attractive beachfront camp site across the Changi Creek, where you can watch the Planes gliding into Changi International Airport while relaxing on the imported sand. It is popular on weekends but almost deserted during the week. You might want to avoid swimming here though.

Changi's beach is where thousands of Singaporean civilians were executed by the Japanese during World War II (WWII). A memorial marks the site.

The atmosphere is almost village-like and a browse around the Changi Village area will turn up cheap clothes, Batik, Indian textiles and electronics.

Next to the Changi Village Bus Interchange is the Changi Point Jetty, where you can catch bumboats to Pulau Ubin or Johor. For a different kind of Singapore day, combine a few hours here with a trip to Pulau Ubin and round the day off with a meal at the famous hawker centre, then a few beers at Charlie's Corner.

In the evenings, Changi Village is a notorious cruising spot for transvestites.

Eating

Changi Village offers lots of choices for food and drinks, and has a small housing estate of low-rise blocks. Once considered the boondocks, the numerous seafood restaurants and pubs flanking Netheravon Road in Changi Village has revived the bustling atmosphere the place enjoyed when the British troops were stationed here.
