Nex to the Old Supreme Court and facing the Padang is Singapore's most important government building, City Hall. Completed in 1929, with a facade of Greek columns and a grand staircase, it was on these steps that Lord Louis Mountbatten accepted the surrender of Singapore by the Japanese General Itagaki on 12 September 1945. Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew declared Singapore's independence from Britain on the same spot 14 years later, in 1959.
