Fashion

Fashion, going hand in hand with Beauty, is an increasingly important trend in our affluent Singapore lifestyle.
Singaporeans are smart and fashionable, which means you'll have no trouble finding every major designer label under the sun. But they are not the adventurous dressers. The most popular single item of clothing is probably the polo shirt. Occasionally you'll see a teenager in a gothic/punk outfit on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) or wandering at the shopping malls, but in terms of daring street fashion, that's about the limit. Most young people stick with the usual jeans/T-shirt combos, imitation American hip-hop gear and skimpy skirt/top outfits, while the T-shirt/singlet, bermudas and thongs (flip-flops) look is almost a Singaporean heartlands uniform. Hair fashions are equally conservative. This is certainly no Tokyo.
Gadgets form a key part of a fashionable outfit and mobile phones, iPods and handhelds are often prominently displayed and constantly fiddled with.
For a couple of weeks in late March/early April, the Singapore Fashion Festival, while no match for Milan, Paris or London, puts on some impressive shows from local and international designers. In October, Singapore Fashion Week showcases the local industry, with exhibitions, awards and shows from local luminaries like M)phosis, Daniel Yam, Allure and GG>5, as well as rising stars.
