There are some lovely old restored homes around the corner on Emerald Hill. Named after William Cuppage, who was the 19th-century owner of the nutmeg estate here, Cuppage Terrace, a renovated terrace of Peranakan-style shophouses dating from the 1920s, is overwhelmed by the surrounding shopping malls and hotels.
Once belonging to wealthy Peranakan families, the 30 or so homes on the slightly curved Emerald Hill Road were built between 1901 and 1925. These houses were also the first to be given conservation status in 1981, which meant the owners could not alter their facades. The result is a tapestry of harmoniously designed shophouses with ornate details that reflect the character of their original owners.
Most of the terrace has been given over to bars and restaurants, as is the Orchard Road end of Emerald Hill.
Look out for the four terrace houses numbering 39 to 45, built in 1903, with fore-courts and gates topped with a Chinese roof. These have an unusually wide frontage and grand Chinese-style entrance gate. Keep an eye out especially for the richly carved original door of No. 127. Separately, you will also be fascinated by houses numbering 121 to 129, which have Art Deco-styles dating from 1925.
