Attractions
England is both small and grandiose. Small because its attractions, towns and villages all seem so close to one another; and grandiose through the impressive number of places and things there are to see. It is therefore important to take the time to savour EnglandY just like its residents savour their beloved five o'clock tea. Although you may think you have seen all of London after one visit, you will realize after returning time and again that there is always more to discover. London is a city of many faces that takes great pleasure in proving the clichés wrong. Open to the world and home to more than 7,000,000 people, the city also has many lesser-known but equally fascinating neighbourhoods to explore, and a wide array of restaurants offering dishes from all over the world. Walking through London, you will have the pleasure of discovering (or revisiting) Westminster Abbey, 10 Downing Street (the Prime Minister's residence), Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, the British Museum and Hyde Park. England's southern region reveals the long shores of the English Channel. The town of Canterbury is renowned for its cathedral, while Dover unveils its famous white cliffs. Brighton is home to a very popular beach and Stonehenge attracts scores of curious visitors to its mysterious megalithic site. Also not to be missed, Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol are typical, quaint English towns. England's central area features several well-known towns: Oxford and Cambridge, with their world-famous universities; Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare; and Birmingham, the country's second-largest city. Well known for its musical history, the north of England gave birth to many English bands, such as The Beatles in Liverpool and Oasis in Manchester, with the latter city having actually gained quite a reputation as England's premier nightspot. Further north, near Scotland, Newcastle is proud of its famous brown ale, named after the town, as well as its native musician son, Sting. West of Newcastle, Lake District National Park is absolutely charming. Lakes, the Irish Sea, hills, moors and sheep all blend together in a picture-perfect setting.
