Eu Yan Sang Medical Hall
From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle
|
Facing Sago Street is Eu Yan Sang Medical Hall, a traditional Chinese medical shop where foreigners can learn more about the mysteries of Chinese herbs and medicines.
First opened in the early 20th century and now very tastefully refurbished, this is Singapore's most famous Chinese medicine centre, which has spawned branches across the country. Founded in Malaysia in 1879 by a Malaysian tin tycoon, Eu Yan Sang, the business spread to Singapore in 1910 and onward to Hong Kong and China. It can be an intimidating place, if only because of the smell, but a few of the staff are approachable and, if you have a genuine ailment, will talk you through the remedies on offer. Beware, besides an offer of free ginseng tea and countless other ginseng products, you might be prescribed anything from deer antlers or tails, crushed centipedes or scorpions, gall bladders and penises.
