Far East Square
From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle

Far East Square, at the top of Telok Ayer Street where it interacts with Cross Street, is a conservation area bounded by four roads: Cross Street, Telok Ayer Street, China Street and Pekin Street. The square blends the new with the old to provide 16,550 sq metres (178,000 sq ft) of commercial space taken up by offices, restaurants, bars and shops. The area encompasses the four kinds of shophouse styles prevalent in Chinatown (Early, Transitional, Late and Art Deco) from the 1840s to the 1960s.
Look out for the five gates that mark the main entrances into Far East Square, each one representing the five elements that make up the Chinese universe: metal, wood, water, fire and earth.
