Geylang Serai Market Edit page

From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle

Geylang Serai Market, hidden behind some older-style housing blocks on Geylang Road, offers more atmosphere on Malay culture than the nearby Malay Cultural Village can ever hope to muster. Its entrance is through a small lane that leads to a crowded, traditional Asian market, crammed with stalls selling food, fabrics and other wares.

It has fascinating wet market of stalls manned by genial owners stocking a wide range of produce, especially hard-to-find vegetables favoured by the Malays. Prices here are considered to be among the lowest in Singapore.

Geylang Serai Market reaches its peak of activity during Ramadan, when the whole area is alive with evening market stalls. Of course, as with many things in Singapore that attain a certain ageing charm, it's going to be torn down and replaced with a new multimillion-dollr market complex, complete with "authentic" Malay designs.
