Singapore Hotels - whether you're looking for a basic dorm bed, the most decadent suite or even a spa, Singapore offers almost every conceivable kind of hotel accommodation.
Thanks to the peerless public transport system, it doesn't really matter which hotel you stay in central Singapore. Everywhere is less than half an hour from everywhere else. If you're looking for atmosphere and character, we recommend Chinatown or Little India, both of which harbour most of the budget accommodation and boutique hotels in shophouse conversions.
Orchard Road and its environs are crammed with identikit upmarket hotels (with a few distinctive exceptions), as is the area around Marina Bay, where you'll find the Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay complex and Suntec City. There are also good hotel options dotted close by the redeveloped Quays of the Singapore River.
If you want to experience the grittier side of Singapore outside your hotel room, then Geylang is worth considering. Likewise, if you want the sea and a beach close at hand, Sentosa's the go, but avoid weekends, when hotel rates and occupancy are higher.
While Singapore might be the most expensive city in Southeast Asia in which to bed down, top hotels are constantly offering promotional deals, sometimes slashing up to half off the official rates (even throwing in breakfast for good measure). The entire year of 2005, for instance, was declared a "promotion period" and many exclusive hotels were offering rates not much higher than mid-range Chinatown guesthouses.
In this highly competitive atmosphere, it pays to call around or, even better, check the hotel websites or discount websites for special deals before you book.
Be aware that reservation desk staff in top hotels usually add a casual (and often barely audible) "plus plus plus" after the rate they quote you. Ignore this at your peril. The three plusses are service charge, government tax and Goods & Services Tax (GST), which together amounts to a breezy 16% on top of your bill.

Price Ranges
Hotel rooms in the cheapest places are cubicle-like, cramped, often windowless and facilities are invariably shared. Most cheaper hotels offer both air-con and cheaper fan rooms. Although basic, these are good places to meet other travellers and share information.
The published rates for a standard hotel room are listed. (In Singapore hotel parlance, a standard room is often called "superior".) Unless otherwise stated, the price will be the same whether the room is single or double occupancy. All these hotels have slightly more expensive "deluxe" or "club" rooms, which tend to be larger, have a better view, and include extras such as breakfast or free Internet access. Most hotels also have suites.
Reservations
There are so many hotels in Singapore that you'll almost never experience a problem finding a hotel room. The only exception may be Chinese New Year, when advance booking is recommended. The best reason to book a hotel in advance is that you can often score substantial discounts.
