Images of Singapore, a diverting historical and cultural museum at Sentosa, stars with Singapore as a powerful Malay sultanate through British colonial times and takes you through its establishment as a busy port and trading centre, its trials during World War II, and the subsequent Japanese surrender. History comes alive at this interesting exhibition. Scenes are re-created using lifelike wax dummies, film footage and dramatic light and sound effects.
Chinese coolies and Indian convict workers share space with Mad (Henry) Ridley with his rubber tree and Miss Joaquim and her orchid, now the national flower of Singapore.
The adjoining Surrender Chamber takes you through the years of World War II with photographs, films, various wartime mementoes and wax displays depicting surrender by the British in 1942, and then by the Japanese in 1945.
The "Festivals of Singapore" section is particularly colourful. This exhibit showcases the celebrations and rituals of the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan through real props, sounds and even smells.
At the forecourt of Images of Singapore is the Stories of the Sea exhibition, an interactive "all-sensory" theatre show journey that traces Singapore's rich maritime heritage through computer animatronics and a recreation of an 1880s dockyard.
