Western Singapore
From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle
|
Western Singapore is a mass of contradictions with a split personality. It's the engine room of the country's economic success and home to the huge, if slowly declining, manufacturing industry. It comprises hard-working industrial areas with docks, factories and refineries. At the same time, it's also full of greenery. It is a major recreation zone that embraces some of Singapore's top green spaces and theme parks.
Western Singapore boasts an entire island devoted to heavy industry. And though the area bristles with HDB Flats and industrial estates, it has the largest number of specialised attractions for kids of any district in Singapore.
Hence, not far from the unnerving spires of the Jurong Island chemical plants and oil refineries, you have the magnificent Jurong Birdpark, Singapore Science Centre, Snow City and Singapore Discovery Centre, plus a few interesting World War II sites.
The Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) leads into the heart of the west, linking downtown Singapore with a bustling industrial suburb called Jurong. But a more pleasant way to explore the coast is by way of Telok Blangah and Pasir Panjang roads, which hug tight to the coast.
Another alternative of seeing Western Singapore is to jump on a harbour cruise or charter your own boat for a seafaring exploration of Singapore's western shore.
